Mayor interviews St. John’s success story PanGeo

St. John’s-based PanGeo specializes in high resolution acoustic imaging solutions to mitigate risk in offshore installations. With additional offices in Halifax, Aberdeen and Taiwan, PanGeo continues to expand its global footprint.

In this video interview with President and CEO Moya Cahill, Mayor Danny Breen learns more about this innovative St. John’s success story, while highlighting some of the many advantages to living, working, studying and investing in our city.

PanGeo’s People: “Many of our employees are homegrown here in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Our universities – the Marine Institute – provide some great graduates, and we use the co-op programs to bring these students in when they’re young and fresh. Our technology is very specific so it’s a great opportunity to hire new grads and train them ourselves within our technology.”

PanGeo’s Technology: “Our sub-bottom imager is a sensor that collects data from the subsea bed. Just like an MRI images your organs, our sub-bottom imager images the geohazards in the subsea bed like boulders, cables or pipelines that would interfere with or create a hazard for the installation of your equipment.”

PanGeo’s Pivot: “We started out in the oil and gas sector where we still do a lot of work, but also now going forward, we’re getting very heavily involved in technology, with the installation of cables; and the offshore renewable energy sector, supporting the installation of wind turbines offshore; everyone is going green; Canada has committed to reducing carbon emissions. Here within PanGeo we’re working at adapting our technology, making it smaller, making it automated so we’ll be able to take the vessel out of the picture, reducing that carbon footprint in the world and helping support Canada get to that goal of net-zero by 2050.”

“When I meet people like Moya Cahill and see the operation of this international company from a base in our city, I am reminded that we have an amazing opportunity to step forward as the global leader we are in ocean technology.” –Danny Breen, Mayor, City of St. John’s

“Ocean technology is an industry that you can create a global footprint from right here in Newfoundland and Labrador. I encourage entrepreneurs to come to St. John’s and see what it’s like. It’s a great place to do business.” –Moya Cahill, President and CEO, PanGeo

On August 3, 2021, Newfoundland’s own Kraken Robotics Inc. announced its acquisition of PGH Capital Inc., including PanGeo Subsea.
